The Story

When we finally convinced our parents, Joanne and Jim, to relocate to California to be closer to us and their grandkids, we knew we had to get their house right. After all, it’s our day job! We lucked out when we found a cute Spanish-style bungalow built in 1928 (Mom has always loved this style!) and were able to update it with a slightly rustic spin. We wanted our parents to feel just as much at home here as they did at their ranch in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, so we tailored the home perfectly to them. We got their input on paint colors and gave them each a dedicated space for their hobbies — a painting room for Mom and a music room for Dad. They couldn’t be happier, and we’re so thrilled with this project that we filmed the whole reno process for our new show, Don’t Hate Your House with the Property Brothers. But we’re doing the big reveal with you right here: Welcome to Mom and Dad’s!

The Front Patio

Of all the beautiful features in the house, this is Mom’s favorite: She loves a front porch. We expanded this covered patio and added a terra-cotta tile floor and arches to make it feel extra special. We couldn't find a white oak arched door in our budget, so we bought a red oak one and bleached it. We got that resourcefulness from Mom and Dad!

The Living Room

For as long as we can remember, family gatherings have revolved around the fireplace. Unfortunately, the existing one in this room was not quite the focal point Mom and Dad were looking for. We created a new dramatic floor-to-ceiling one that suits the space and their lives better. The brass and abaca rope pendant is one of our designs with Visual Comfort & Co., and the sofas are from Wayfair.

The Dining Room

This space flows into the kitchen and can be seen from the living room, so our goal was to pack in lots of storage without sacrificing style. We built glass-front cabinets for displaying pictures and other pieces that make the place feel like home. That big island in the kitchen might actually be larger than the ones we put in our own homes!
