How to Make a Combination Outdoor Planter and Privacy Screen

Does your deck or lanai need a little more privacy? Make this simple vertical planter to add greenery and shield your outdoor space from nosy neighbors.

Cut List

• From two of the 1x4 x 8’ boards, cut four pieces 44" long.
• Cut three of the 1x4 x 8’ to 7' long.

Build the Frame

Lay the three 7' boards on a flat surface, evenly spaced with outside edges of the two outside boards 44" apart. Place two of the 44” boards under and over each end of the 7' boards so they perpendicularly sandwich the 7' boards. Make sure all the ends are flush and attach all the pieces using 1-1/2” screws. To prevent the wood from splitting, pre-drill holes before adding screws.

Add Planter Boxes

Lay the frame on a flat surface and arrange window boxes to create the desired design. Remember to consider what plants will fill the boxes and if any hanging plants or other accessories will be part of the design. When the design is determined, use a carpenter’s square to make level marks where the boxes will be placed.

Cut the 1x2 boards into pieces that match the lengths of each of the boxes. Use 1" screws to attach those pieces to the frame where the bottom of the boxes will sit. Place the boxes against the frame with the bottom of the boxes resting on the 1x2 supports. Use a clamp to hold the boxes in place. Use 1" screws to attach the boxes to the frame by screwing through the back of the frame and into the box.

Add the Top Cap

Raise the top end of the screen off of the surface slightly and attach the 46” board centered directly over the top to create a cap. Use 1" screws to secure it to the frame.

Add Hardware for Hanging Plants

If adding a hanging plant, insert a 1-1/2” screw through the horizontal top piece. Center the screw in the opening so you can hook a hanging planter over the screw. The plant hanger will go between the front and back boards and rest on the concealed screw.

Attach Screen to Deck or Porch Railing

If the screen will be attached to a wooden deck or balcony, use L brackets to fasten the frame to the deck at the bottom of the rails.
If the screen will be attached to a metal deck or balcony, use U brackets that will attach to the frame and wrap around a metal railing.

Add Plants

Add plants to the boxes. Hang plants and other design elements as desired.
