For those of you already hooked on Good Bones, you’ve got a good idea of the roller-coaster ride you’re in for when Season Four gets underway. The adventures (and misadventures) of Mina, Karen and crew, as they take on the rescue of distressed properties that other renovators wouldn’t go near, are seldom short on surprises. From crumbling building foundations to a falling chimney collapsing through a roof, to unidentified substances found in a long-forgotten refrigerator, the challenges and surprises of Mina and Karen’s chosen vocation are many and varied – and you can expect plenty more this season.

“Mom and I take on some of the nastiest houses you’ve ever seen,” said Mina. “Then we turn those rundown houses into some of the nicest homes in the neighborhood.” It’s all part of the stated mission of the duo’s self-styled enterprise that goes by the moniker Two Chicks and a Hammer. That mission is to “revitalize Indianapolis – one property at a time.”

We’re not afraid to take on the worst of the worst.
Karen E Laine

For the uninitiated, here’s the rundown. Karen E Laine is a retired lawyer who put her legal career on hold to pursue a side-track of saving and renovating old houses – some of which have looming future involving a wrecking ball. She joined forces with her daughter Mina, a recent college grad with a penchant for real estate and keen instinct for finding neglected and unloved properties with potential to be something more.

After restoring one home (Mina’s first home after college), the two became consumed with the idea of, not only saving deserving old houses and flipping them for a tidy profit, but in so doing helping create a groundswell of community enhancement, attracting engaged young buyers to the city’s historic neighborhoods — new residents who bring with them enthusiasm and caring for the community’s history, culture and roots. Building a critical mass of these types of clients and residents, it is hoped, will help ignite the sparks to help enrich and revive underappreciated portions of the city. It's a formula that seems to be working.

As Mina and Karen take on these labors of love, the proceeds from one of their successful renovations and flips gets channeled into helping subsidize the next. And so on, and so on. Pretty soon whole streets and blocks begin to take on a new look and new promise. Improvement begets improvement and, before you know it, there’s a sort of phenomenon going on.

To attract the young and adventuresome urban pioneers who value and are looking for these kinds of homes, Karen and Mina employ distinctive, colorful and occasionally offbeat designs in their renovations – as well as ones that draw inspiration from homes’ vintage attributes.

Amidst all of this, with Mina’s laser focus on meeting deadlines and getting the job done, and Karen’s artistic and sometimes less-than-conventional creative ideas, sparks can fly. And they often do, but in the most entertaining and endearing way. It may not be the most typical mother-daughter dynamic, but it’s one that keeps us coming back.

Part of this season’s arc will put a spotlight on a special project that’s particularly close to home – pun intended. Mina, who along with husband Stephen welcomed their first child to the world in August, is in a race to finish her family’s new forever home ahead of baby Jack’s arrival. To create her dream spaces, she incorporates her favorite design elements from past renovations and adds personalized touches – including a tiled doggie spa for “family members” Sophie and Frank, and a charming second-story balcony stylized from her favorite vacation spot.

And there’s more in store for fans. In a new, exclusive short-form companion series, the mother/daughter team use their creative and resourceful ideas to help clients create super-functional and unique small spaces – such as an office, laundry room or walk-in closet – on a tight budget. Beginning in June, the digital companion series Small Space, Big Potential will be available via the HGTV app, on the Good Bones show page at HGTV.com and across multiple platforms including HGTV's YouTube channel.

The Good Bones Season Four premiere is on Tuesday, May 14 at 9pm|8c. Keep checking back here for updates.
