Here’s How to Cultivate Farmhouse Character

Once deployed for practical purposes and now celebrated for their old-school, authentic vernacular, farmhouse design elements are longtime MVPs among HGTV stars. Fair warning: Surveying this harvest of HGTV's very best farmhouse designs (like this 1880s kitchen, lovingly restored by Farmhouse Fixer phenom Jonathan Knight and Kristina Crestin) may inspire antiquing, refinishing and even renovation.

Building on (Weathered) Brick

Jon and Kristina brought tried-and-true farmhouse style to the new Colorado build they renovated for Rock the Block by investing in ultra-evocative finishes. They laid well-weathered brick in the pantry and wrapped the walls in wide, knotty wood paneling. The butcher-block island they created for additional workspace and storage contrasts beautifully with the vertical black paneling selected for the lower cabinets.

Inner Beauty: Exposed Lath

Jon and Kristina reimagined his family’s 110-year-old farmhouse by swapping out contemporary "updates" in favor of historically appropriate features. Here, you can see exposed lath, a building material that served as the base for plaster walls prior to the 1940s. Styled with a repurposed worktable and crowned with exposed ceiling beams, this feature wall is the rightful focal point for the home’s living room.

Ag Equipment as Art

Jon revamped this former music room with rustic character. In addition to hanging whimsical cow wallpaper, he mounted a piece of agricultural equipment as decor.
