Coop Sleep Goods is well-known for its Coop Original Adjustable Pillow, which tops our list of the best pillows we’ve reviewed and tested. But did you know the brand also has a line of adjustable cooling pillows? Faced with another dreadfully hot Mid-Atlantic summer, I seized the opportunity to test the Coop EdenCool+ Pillow to see if it lives up to its claims of premium cooling comfort. Here’s how I fared after two weeks of trying it out.

What Is a Cooling Pillow?

Cooling pillows are designed to wick moisture and draw heat from your head, neck, and shoulders. They can be made with synthetic and/or natural materials and come in various designs.

The outer cover may be woven with phase change materials that absorb heat and emit a soothing sensation. It could also be made from breathable fabrics like cotton, bamboo viscose, or Tencel (eucalyptus). Some designs incorporate mesh gussets for extra airflow.

The inside of a cooling pillow might contain a ventilated foam core or shredded memory foam to promote better air circulation. It may also be infused with heat-conducting elements like gel, copper, graphite, or phase change material. (Foam is otherwise prone to trapping heat.) Natural latex and down are other popular fill options for their breathability.

What Is The Coop EdenCool+ Pillow?

The Coop EdenCool+ Pillow was released in 2023 as an upgraded version of the Coop EdenCool Pillow. Both products feature an adjustable loft (filling) but the EdenCool+ boasts what the brand calls its “most advanced cooling technologies.” It’s made of:

  • A machine-washable cool-touch cover that’s a blend of polyester and polyethylene (a type of plastic)
  • A nylon inner liner to wick moisture
  • A ventilated memory foam layer infused with phase change gel for a cooler, firmer surface (one side only)
  • A proprietary fill of plus-shaped memory foam, gel, and polyester fibers designed to be twice as breathable as the previous EdenCool Pillow

What We Like
  1. Does have a cooling effect
  2. Easy to set up
What We Don't Like
  1. Memory foam makes it hard to maintain loft

The Coop EdenCool+ Pillow comes in two sizes (queen and king) and is also available in a couple of ergonomic designs for side and combination sleepers. It’s earned CertiPUR-US and GREENGUARD Gold certifications, ensuring low emissions and high standards for indoor air quality.

Prices range from $139 for a queen Coop EdenCool+ Pillow to $159 for a king-size. You can purchase directly from Coop Sleep Goods or its online storefronts at Amazon and Target. Occasional discounts cut 15% to 20% off the list price.

How I Tested the Coop EdenCool+ Pillow

I slept on a queen-size Coop EdenCool+ Pillow for two weeks, which is roughly how long it takes for your body to adjust to a new pillow, according to the Coop website. However, Coop Sleep Goods offers a generous 100-night trial.

My main focus was on the pillow’s temperature regulation and ability to support various sleep positions. However, I also considered how easy it is to set up and maintain. (Shredded and cut foam pillows often require regular fluffing and occasional re-adjustment.)

During the first week, I slept without a pillowcase to fully experience the cooling properties of the EdenCool+ pillow’s specialty cover. In the second week, I added a silk pillowcase to observe any changes in its effectiveness.

Throughout the testing period, I maintained a sleep environment I found comfortable. My bedroom temperature ranged between 68 and 72 degrees, and I slept on a hybrid mattress with cotton sheets and a midweight comforter.

Setting Up the Coop EdenCool+ Pillow

My Coop EdenCool+ Pillow arrived boxed and vacuumed-sealed, already packed with fill. When I unfurled it, I had to fluff it into shape and zip it in the cooling cover. Per Coop Sleep Goods’ recommendation, I aired it out for 24 hours before sleeping on it, which helped dissipate the mild off-gassing scent.

On the first night, I didn’t add or remove any fill from the pillow. (A half-pound bag of extra fill is included.) Although the pillow comes with instructions on how to customize the loft for your sleep style, I wanted to take advantage of the free virtual consultation service so I could ask questions and make sure I was doing it right.

I met with Coop Sleep Consultant Tami McKenzie via Zoom, who offered her advice based on my feedback and her observations of me as a side/stomach sleeper. I experimented with using a higher and lower loft throughout my two weeks of testing.

What I Liked About the Coop EdenCool+ Pillow

If you're only reading this review to find out if this pillow sleeps cool: Yes, it does. The cover has a soothing sensation upon contact that felt especially refreshing on a hot evening. I primarily slept on the firm side with the ventilated gel foam layer, which likely helped. Even when I developed a mild fever one evening, the pillow helped make the experience more tolerable.

The free consultation was incredibly helpful, and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes to ask questions or lives alone. Coop Sleep Consultant McKenzie did an excellent job of explaining everything in plain language. McKenzie also works with Coop Sleep wholesale for healthcare professionals, allowing her the opportunity to deepen her knowledge of the product.

I preferred sleeping on the Coop EdenCool+ Pillow without a pillowcase. In fact, Coop Sleep recommends going without one. If you choose to do this, make sure to wash the cover regularly following the simple care instructions to keep it fresh. (You can pop it in the washer and the dryer.)

A 100-night trial is more common for a mattress than a pillow, but that’s exactly what Coop Sleep offers with its EdenCool+ Pillow. It also comes with a five-year warranty, which is higher than average for a pillow. (Most people usually replace their pillows within a year or two.)

What I Didn’t Like About the Coop EdenCool+ Pillow

The plus-shaped memory foam, gel, and polyester fibers give this pillow a very plush feel. While the memory foam layer adds some firmness to the one side, I still found myself sinking lower throughout the night, regardless of how much fill my pillow had. I prefer a firmer pillow.

You’ll also need to take some time to set it up. Coop Sleep recommends waiting up to 24 hours to let the pillow fully air out. While you can sleep on it as soon as it fluffs, allowing the foam to fully expand will provide a more accurate feel of the pillow. This also helps reduce any off-gassing odors, which I noticed with my test product.

Shaping the pillow to your ideal height can be even more time-consuming. It may take a while to get it right, even if you have a consultation. The pillow also requires regular fluffing if you want it to remain comfortable.

Do Cooling Pillows Have Health Benefits?

Many adults in the U.S. report occasionally or frequently feeling too hot to sleep at night. Studies show a connection between elevated temperatures and sleep deprivation, which can lead to impaired judgment, lack of focus, and an increased risk of developing health issues like diabetes or stroke.

Using a cooling pillow along with breathable sheets, lightweight pajamas, and a cool, dark bedroom can help you maintain an optimal body temperature, leading to longer, more restorative sleep. This, in turn, can benefit your overall health — but you’ll also want to address the root cause of any chronic overheating with help from a medical professional.

Who Should Buy the Coop EdenCool+ Pillow?

The Coop EdenCool+ Pillow is an investment at $139, but in my experience, it performed as advertised when it came to maintaining a comfortable sleep temperature and cooling relief. The 100-night trial and five-year warranty are also great perks. However, if you like a firmer feel or don’t want to frequently fluff your pillow, you won’t be able to enjoy its cooling benefits as much.

Otherwise, if you’re looking for a cooling pillow you can melt into in the best way possible, the Coop EdenCool+ Pillow is it.
