Leave your days of baby oil and aluminum foil in the past and spoil your skin with the protection it deserves this summer with the help of a hardworking sun hat. We scoured the shops to find the creme de la creme sun hats to provide you with the best protection and top-tier style you’ll look forward to throwing on for gardening, lounging by the pool or strolling through a new-to-you city.

How We Picked

HGTV Dream Home 2016 Back Patio

Fully Equipped

Fresh white towels, a wide-brim sun hat and dark shades allow friends and family to sit for hours on the lounge chairs on the sun deck.

We take skin protection (and summer style) seriously around here, so we consulted a pro before curating our sun hat shopping guide. We talked with Chelsea Marais, a board-certified physician assistant in cosmetic dermatology, to learn what features she recommends looking for when shopping for sun hats to ensure maximum sun protection. From there, we spent hours researching sun hats from trusted retailers and then comparing each based on Marais’ recommendations, their size and color options, materials, sun protection and brim lengths to bring you the best options for every style and budget.

What to Consider Before Buying

Sun Protection

Whether you are searching for a statement sun hat for poolside lounging or hunting for a practical (but pretty) garden hat, skin safety should always be your top priority when shopping. Though a sun hat’s brim may create shade to keep you cool, not all hats are equipped with UVA and UVB-blocking technologies to protect you from harm. “Aim for a sun hat labeled UPF 50+,” says Marais. “You want a sun hat with a brim wide enough to cover your ears, nose and preferably your neck, too, as these are the most common spots for skin cancer.”

Materials

Popular materials for sun hats include natural woven materials, cotton, canvas, nylon and polyester. Woven hats offer a classic look with a structured silhouette and show less wear over time than their cotton or polyester counterparts. The only catch? Woven hats are often less likely to come with UPF 50+ sun protection. Cotton, canvas, nylon and polyester hats are the go-to materials for packable sun hats and are easily found with built-in sun-blocking technology. These materials lack the structure of natural woven sun hats and are easily stained with consistent use.

Brim Length

Brim length is another consideration worth meditating on before shopping. This measurement determines how much shade is cast across your face and neck and, sometimes, shoulders. Brim length varies between 3 and 6+ inches for adult sun hats and 2 inches for children. Sun hats with shorter brim lengths provide less coverage but are often the more comfortable option when working in the yard or playing sports. Those with longer brim lengths provide extra sun protection across the upper back and shoulders but may impair your peripheral vision, making these best suited for lounging.

Marais’ final tip to know before heading out for some vitamin D? “Never forget your sunscreen! Look for SPF 30+ to reap the best anti-aging and cancer prevention benefits.”

Still uncertain what sun hat to scoop up for you, your partner or your kiddos this summer? Fret not, friend — we have an option for everyone in your family. Bonus: Every hat on our list comes equipped with Marais’ recommended UPF 50+ protection and covers your nose, ears and neck.
